The Spiritual Life is a Journey of Intimacy with Jesus. The Church in America today rightly believes that the single most vital characteristic of every Christian should be a living and vibrant relationship with Christ, focused around Scripture and Prayer.

This same value has been shared by the Christian Church across the centuries, but they have approached spiritual growth in the midst of community by gathering together for Mass and reciting liturgical prayers together.

In theory, many of us recoil in some ways at the structure of such liturgies, preferring the personal daily quiet time model. But in practice, the sad reality is that, by in large, the Church today is not creating Christians who cultivate their entire lives, much less their spiritual lives, around an intimate devotional life of spending time daily with Jesus in Scripture and prayer.
